Nowadays, flying privately has become an indispensable part of daily life for many people who work in important fields such as finance or sports management and want to fly business class without giving out too much money to airlines. But how much does it cost? We’ve done all the math!
Luckily, there is a way to reduce the cost of flying private, by what is commonly referred to as empty legs or empty leg flights (sometimes also called ‘deadhead‘).
What is an Empty Leg?
Empty legs are one-way flights booked by someone else and don’t have any passengers on board and the aircraft has to position before or after the ‘live’ flight.
And while they may be rare than flights with passengers, they’re still something that many people look forward to
To illustrate this, let’s look at an example.
Assume that a fictitious client of ours named Jack lives near Westchester and urgently needs to travel to west Palm Beach for family reasons. His preferred departure airport is Westchester NY , but no aircraft with the right specifications (or crew) is currently available at this particular airport. We offer him a beautiful Phenom 300 that can depart later tonight, but it is currently parked at Teterboro. So, the aircraft will first have to position from Teterboro to Westchester before picking up Bob and flying him to West Palm Beach
Now, Bob doesn’t know yet how long he will be staying in west palm Beach so he doesn’t book a return flight yet. The aircraft now has to fly its last leg empty, i.e. without any passengers on board, back to its home base in Teterboro.
This first positioning flight (Teterboro – Westchester , NY ) can already be considered an empty leg, although it’s just a fairly short flight. The last leg from West Palm Beach, FL back to Teterboro, NY , however, can offer a great advantage to people who need to travel in this direction around the same time as the aircraft’s planned return trip, resulting in a significant reduction in cost both for the traveler and the charter company.
A win-win situation!
